SUMMARY

Ordered through H L Gorner, Wigan and collected from the Mercedes factory, this now rather rare W202 C250 TD Elegance Estate had been in the custody of the same owner from new until his death in 2019. His widow told me the car was almost exclusively used for continental touring in the summer, and kept garaged in a heated dry (de-humidified) integral garage, hooked up to a battery conditioner when not in use.  The respect in which this car has been held is almost beyond belief. I smiled to myself when I collected it – there was an almost new BMW sitting outside under a tree covered in bird lime, whilst this 20 year old Mercedes was under cover, in the garage.  Not long after acquiring the car, word quickly got around, and I subsequently sold this car about a year ago, to a member of the Mercedes Club. However due a change of circumstances brought about by Covid-19 pandemic, it’s available again, giving someone else the chance to own this exceptional car; and I say that quite sincerely, as you will not find another like it.  

As you’d expect the service schedule has been strictly adhered to, and at the owners insistence, it’s been exclusively run on Mobil 1 engine oil throughout its entire life, which has been changed as regular as the proverbial communion wine. This is clearly paid massive dividends as the engine is smooth and quiet, and shows absolutely no signs of any wear. As is the nature of a vehicle with this type of ownership, use tailed right off in 2015, as the owner fell into ill health, with the car having covered just 500 miles since then, and I did 100 of those when I collected the car!  MOT history is also exemplary, with not one single MOT failure.

Specification is also somewhat refreshing, some would even say weird, in that it has leather upholstery, air-conditioning and cruise control, but particularly attention was taken to make the car more discreet by specifying  steel wheels (albeit specified with the wider 17x 15J rims and 205/60 R15 tyres,)  badge delete option and no radio. On asking the late gentleman’s widow why there wasn’t a radio she told me her late husband never had a radio in any of his cars as he thought it too much of a distraction, and he also said that he didn’t buy a Mercedes to listen to the radio when he could listen to one of the best engines in the world instead! The car has since been fitted with a suitably subtle modern radio (Continental CDD7418UB – DAB/USB/Bluetooth), but great care has been taken so that it can be retained to its original “radio delete” spec if required. I can also fit a genuine MB period radio if required.

 In keeping with the rest of the car, and as you’d rightly expect, it drives like a brand new W202 C-Class, everything feels like new, and even smells like new and it retains that distinctive “new Mercedes” smell that only those that have owned  of Mercedes will understand. It also makes you realise what a golden opportunity Mercedes missed with the W201 190 – a compact station wagon with a torquey turbo diesel engine and a five speed automatic transmission for me, makes this almost the perfect car.

So, there you have it. I could write page upon page about this car, but if you want probably the best example of this once almost ubiquitous car, this surely has it be it, I would even wager that this is probably the best W202 Estate in the country.

 

MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES

MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon.  Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will! 

My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic  quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish.  I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.

MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too.  I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
